Winona Community Sports & Recreation Center Summer 2009
The Center
- 400-meter, 8-lane championship-level running track with full facilities for all jumping and throwing events
- Artificial turf regulation football and soccer field with lighting
- Adjacent grass practice field for soccer, football, and recreation
- Facility accommodates practices and competition for college, high school, and junior high school programs
- Open for use by community members, parks and recreation programs, elementary school programs
- Located at Paul Giel Field in Winona
A Community Sports & Recreation Center
- Partners cooperating on the $3 million project include Winona Area Public Schools, the Cotter Schools, Winona State University, the Morrie Miller Athletic Foundation, and members of the Winona community.
Why Paul Giel Field?
- Centrally located for Winona Senior High, Cotter, Winona State, and community members
- Existing infrastructure, such as grandstand, fencing, restrooms, and concessions
- Ideally configured for an accessible, fan and athlete friendly sports and recreation center
- Engineering studies show stable base to support facility
Why Now?
- There is only one outdoor track and field facility in Winona, located at Winona Senior High School. The existing surface is badly deteriorated, making practices, meets, physical education, and recreation hazardous. The football and soccer field at Paul Giel Field is badly in need of an upgrade to an all-weather surface. Because the current high school fields lie in a wetland area, upgrade and expansion of the facility to include a championship track, artificial turf, and lighting is not feasible.
Who Benefits?
- More than 500 middle school, high school, and college students use the track and playing fields daily
- More than 100 children are involved in parks and recreation summer track programs
- Numerous community members enjoy jogging, walking, and running at a measured, safe facility
- Hundreds of Winona's football and soccer players practice and play at Paul Giel Field
- Community members who will enjoy an upgraded venue for commencements, games, and recreation
