Coaches shall:
- Exhibit and teach good sportsmanship at all times.
- Avoid public display of criticism in front of participants or spectators.
- Avoid a "winning at all costs" attitude.
- Remember that this is to be about the kids, not the coaches and/or their egos.
- Keep the games and practice positive and as fun as possible.
- Do a professional job with fellow coaches and the officiating crews.
- Display humility in defeat and graciousness in victory.
- Conclude practices on time as scheduled.
- Keep a positive attitude with the ultimate goal of keeping as many young athletes in football as possible.
- Keep It Simple!
- "Young Guns" Quarter Kosi to explain in detail. This needs to be followed to the letter. Includes punter as well.
- Blow out games, back to Young Guns.
- Keep parents in mind when coaching.
Miscellaneous rules
General:
- Mouth guards are to be worn in both practice and in games.
- Field will be 80 yards long, have 10 yard end zones, and have a width equal from one side line to the opposite side hash mark.
- Ball will be spotted at the center of the field for each play.
- No kickoffs. Offensive team gets the ball on their 25 yard line to begin the game.
- The game consists of (5) quarters. The 3rd quarter is dedicated to our younger and more inexperienced players. This 3rd quarter will be a running clock situation.
- Scores from all quarters will count.
- EXTRA POINTS: 2 points for a successful pass conversion, 1 point for a successful run conversion.
- Ties will be broken by a coin flip to determine possession. Each team gets the ball on the 10 yard line. If the game is still tied after one series of downs, one more series of downs will be played from the 10 yard line. Play until a winner is determined.
- If a team leads by more than 20 points, they cannot pass again until the score differential is less than 20 points.
- Officials will be provided with game rules prior to the season.
- (5) yard penalties for non-flagrant fouls, (10) or (15) yard penalties for flagrant or personal fouls.
Offensive
- No motion allowed.
- Split backs, "I" backs, or Shotgun formations are the three allowable formations.
- One TE allowed. No double tight formation.
- "Twins" receivers may be used. TE must be on the opposite side of the "Twins" receivers.
- Lineman cannot carry the football unless there has been a fumble.
- Wide receivers must be on the line of scrimmage.
- 120lb Rule: Anyone 120 lbs and over cannot carry the ball. No exceptions. The positions affected are QB, WR, TE, and Running Backs.
- On 4th down the offensive team will announce its intentions, whether they are punting or not. Punting situations are uncontested. Punter will take the snap from the center and backs up into the punting formation. All other players are on the line of scrimmage. Once the pall is the punted, the play is live.
- TRICK PLAYS: Each team is allowed one trick play per half. We are trying to teach aggression and defensive responsibility. Trick plays include: running back passes, QB throwbacks, reverses, statue of liberty, hook and ladder, and fumblerooskie. Plays not considered a trick play are: screens, counter, and QB Bootlegs.
Defensive
- Standard defensive set is the 6-1. (6) down linemen and (1) LB.
- Each offensive player on the line must have an opposing defensive player line up across from them.
- The defensive player is allowed to shade. If defensive player does not contact the offensive player and goes around them, an illegal procedure penalty will be called on the defensive team.
- No slanting, stunting, or blitzing. If the QB leaves the tackle- to- tackle corridor, then he is "live." All defensive players can pursue the QB at that time.
- Defensive players on the end of the defensive alignments that have outside contain responsibilities, must still contact the offensive player first.
- Middle LB and Corner backs must be 3 yards off the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball.
- Cornerbacks must play head up on wide receivers.
- Linebacker can be head up on the center or either of the guards.
- Free and Strong safeties must be at least 8 yards off of the line of scrimmage. They cannot blitz. QB is "live" once he leaves the tackle- to- tackle corridor.
- "No Contact" rule on the wide receivers. TE contact is allowed within the first 5 yards if the ball is not airborne.
- Short yardage situations/goal line stand; the defense stays in the same formation but can be compressed towards the line of scrimmage.
- When receiving punts (2) men back, everyone else on the line of scrimmage.
- Pick a person and block them to prevent them from getting to the return man.
