2009 Morrie Miller Athletic Foundation Banquet
The Winona area athletic programs, and all young people of Winona, regardless of where they go to school, need your help.
Morrie Miller was a marvelous athlete and a marvelous human being. He would be particularly pleased to know what started as a golf tournament in his honor has expaned into foundation hosting a series of fundraising events to help a variety of youth athletic programs for both boys and girls.
Guest Speaker: Jerry Seeman
Jerry grew up in Southeast Minnesota, attending Plainview High School where he was a stand-out athlete in football, basketball,
and baseball. He then went to Winona State University where he played basketball for two years and quarterback for three
years.
The highlight of his football career was quarterbacking the 1956 team to the conference championship. He was involved in
many non-athletic activities as well, and graduated in 1957 with a degree in mathematics.
Jerry became a successful high school basketball coach with a .750 winning percentage. Starting in 1963, Jerry officiated high school football and basketball games in Minnesota and Wisconsin and in 1972 accepted a position as a referee for the Big Ten. In 1975 he was hired
by the NFL as a line judge.
In the NFL, Jerry went from line judge to head linesman to referee to Senior Director of Officiating, and he stayed at that position until 2001.
Jerry officiated in 15 playoff games, including two Pro Bowls, and was head referee for Super Bowls XXIII and XXV. Jerry is credited for simplifying the rules and also for implementing the instant replay system. He was involved in training and grading officials, and his most famous quote is
"Your calls had better be Super Bowl calls...We don't want to determine the outcome of games unless it's the most blatant thing you've ever seen."
